The 80- to 90- horsepower output was a staggering statistic during those times. This became the impetus for engineers and scientists to come up with faster and more powerful internal combustion engines. And by 1982, a turbo diesel engine was developed using a turbocharged engine that produced up to 123 hp. It also has two available shifting options, including the 4-speed automatic transmission and the 5-speed manual transmission system. All these improvements have been made without tarnishing the continued efficiency and reliability

The chassis platform of the Mercedes Benz 300D uses the platform similar to the pioneering W123, considered as the most prolific platform in Mercedes history. Though it ended production in 1985, virtually all of the cars based on the chassis are still on the roads today. This proves the quality and durability of the original design. The legacy of the 300D went on until 1993, but a different design, engine (OM602, a turbocharged inline five cylinder) and chassis (W124) to cope with the new trends in technology that time.
