The Nixon company was founded in Encinitas, California in the year 1997 by a partnership of Andy Laats and Chad DiNenna. Nixon is an accessories company that focuses on the youth lifestyle market. The company began its career with custom built watches that were focused on customers that specialized in surfing, skating, snowboarding, skiing, and fashion stores. In the year 2000, Nixon expanded its accessories lines to include limited softgoods. In January of 2006, Nixon was bought out by Billabong International for around $54.6 million American dollars. Currently they are a world wide business that sells in markets in over twenty-five countries.

Nixon watches are known for their unique designs and solid craftsmanship. They have been sold to many active outdoor enthusiasts for several years now and with their purchase by Billabong they have only grown more profitable. At one time Nixon watches were once classified into a categorized system with such notable names as business and elite. Currently their watch line is separated into three different groups. These groups are men's, women's, and elite types.

Watches made by Nixon vary greatly in function and style. Many of the original watch styles have been taken off the market or have undergone a serious style change. Current watch selections will often have several different styles for the same production model.

Overall, Nixon is recognized as a world leader in watch production and sales. They are a relatively new company but they have managed to become a magnate in the world market for accessories. Their products range from simple seeming watches such as the Time Tell P to the heavy metal 51-30 divers range. The innovative styles of Nixon watches cannot be overstated. Unlike many of the companies in the market that sell watches Nixon is willing to try bold new designs. Some of them do not even use numbers and only rend either a dot or the hands for viewing. These watches are very accurate, the Newton and the Vega are good examples of this line, but they require an individual to actually know the general idea of how to tell time on a watch. These are obviously more for style than accuracy. However, there are other models produced by Nixon that are the epitome of exact, precise, temporal measurement.

One such watch is the Murph. The Murph is a square faced watch for men. This watch is available in a wide variety of coloration from traditional gold and silver to bright blue. It features a top half that is opaque with a highly visible and accessible crown. This makes changing the time on it almost ridiculously easy. When this is combined with the Japanese direct drive quartz technology that allows for the second hand to run on its own dial system the watch owner has a very high-end time piece on his or her hands.

When it comes to the ladies, Nixon watches do not fall short. The broken heart pendant model is a well known timepiece due to its unique shape.
