Portable generators can come in handy, or they can be a lifesaver. We've all experienced a power outage sometime in our lives. Oddly enough, it usually comes at a time when we were doing something important. Maybe working in our office, operating a household appliance, or watching the Super Bowl on TV.

The real problem exists when you don't have power in emergency situations. Portable generators can be essential in cold climate, where you might freeze to death, or, if you were stranded out in the middle of nowhere.

What are Portable Generators?

Portable Generators are emergency backup power sources. They usually run on gasoline, liquid petroleum gas, and diesel. They are small enough to move around, and need to be manually connected and started.

These should not be confused with standby (stationary) generators. Standby generators are ready to run automatically when your power supply shuts off, or by the click of a button.

Common Uses of Portable Generators

Kitchen Use - Portable generators could fire up your microwave oven so you could fix quick meals for your family in an emergency situation. They could also power your refrigerator and freezer, and prevent your food from spoiling, or defrosting. It's also good for any other kitchen appliances.

Lighting - There's nothing worse than being in the dark, especially when you are used to having light. Portable generators allow you to see what's going on, and at the same time, let you watch a good game, movie, or let your kids watch their favorite cartoons.

Camping - Portable generators are great for those, who don't like to totally rough it while camping. Items can be plugged in when they are needed. These are great for campsites when you are staying in tents, or in a van, or RV.

Boating - Using portable generators in your sailboat or yacht can make life on a lake, river, or sea more comfortable. However, you need to make sure you have proper wiring and grounding when using portable generators on boats. If not, you run the risk of getting seriously shocked from the alternating current that is produced.

Fuel Types of Portable Generators

1. Gasoline - Gasoline is the most common fuel type used on portable generators. One of the major concerns with gasoline is that it's highly flammable. It's also difficult to transport a lot of gasoline around in containers, because of the possibility of fire and explosions.

2. Propane - Propane gas can be stored for a couple of years. It's great for portable generators, because it is very clean burning fuel.

3. Diesel - Diesel can provide more power than gasoline generators, and it's more fuel efficient. In addition, diesel isn't affected by colder temperatures, like gasoline.

4. Natural Gas - There are some portable generators that can run on natural gas, but they require professional installation. Natural gas is normally used for standby heaters.

Portable generators can be lightweight and easy to use. You only need to find one that has enough watts to support what you need.
