Time to air your hi vis clothing.

The clocks have recently been set back an hour in the UK, which means that your commute home will now be conducted in the dark. There are benefits to the longer winter nights: snuggling up to loved ones in front of the fire, snuggling up in bed with some steaming tea and a book and more snuggling in general. But for people who have to work late shifts, an extra hour of dark can translate into an extra hour of danger, especially for those who have to work outside.

Municipal workers, paramedics, traffic wardens and crossing guards have to wear hi vis clothing all the time anyway, but in winter the ability to be seen becomes even more important, and not just for outdoor jobs. Commuting to and from work becomes that little bit more dangerous on murky winter nights. Hi vis trousers and jackets don't quite cut it in the fashion world, however, so it's unlikely that we'll see a sudden influx men's hi vis clothing on the tube or bus. And unless someone finds a way to co-ordinate hi vis handbags and hi vis shoes, women's hi vis clothing is equally unlikely to take off.

The fashion conscious can work around the need for reflective clothing by wearing light coloured coats or jackets, so they don't have to abandon the safety and anonymity of charcoal grey and black business suits. It's also a good idea to consider using high visibility tape on your shoes. You don't have to be obvious about it; a few strips on the soles and heels will show up nicely as you walk.

You don't have to work in dangerous situations to make high visibility clothing part of your winter uniform. You don't have to sacrifice style for form and functionality either. A tasteful white or cream coat will more than meet your high visibility needs and you can stand out from the crowd with white umbrella rather than buying yet another black one.

If you cycle to and from work, or even recreationally, you shouldn't need to be told how important it is to make yourself as visible as possible. Place lights under your bike saddle and below your handlebars so that traffic can see you coming and going. Ensure that your pedals have reflective strips and forego your desire to be chic at all times and invest in some hi vis clothing. A hi vis vest is your best option because it's easy to slip over your clothes but you can also get high visibility jackets specially designed to keep you warm during winter. You can never be too visible, so top off your hi vis outfit with some reflective strips on your helmet. As they say, it's better to wear hi vis clothing than to be sorry.
