Fish Oil for…. Canines?

Try gassing up your search engine with the words "fish oil" and it will showcase a load of results that are mostly related to health – human, that is.  But what about pets, then?  Dogs are, by far, the most loved pet that there is on the planet, that nearly every household has a barking head among them.  And dedicated owners take care of them like they were their own children.

The canine fan base continues to grow by the day because of the lovable nature that dogs present.  Their food and veterinary visits are sometimes costlier, but pet lovers just don't care.  They would give their canine companions velvety bassinets and creamy baths, let alone bejeweled wardrobe and accessories.  Their diet comes in the form of high quality canned food, biscuits and stick treats, and the same fish oil that the owner takes as a supplement can do the same for them!

Although there are some pet food that claim to contain Omega 3 fatty acids, this is a misconception.  What is present in common dog food is Omega 6, which, if taken in excessive amounts, can contribute to the development of degenerative diseases.  It is for this reason that the essence of the Omega 3 that is present in fish oil is highlighted.  It tends to buffer the naturally existing Omega 6 in dry pet food.

What fish oil does for them is basically just the same as its benefits to humans.  It targets primarily the skin and heart.  In the case of dogs, their skin can get pretty sensitive, which explains for the rapid progression of inflammatory skin conditions.  There have been studies that document the positive effect of fish oil on their skin, not to mention its notable effects on their coats.  Cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension and cholesterol issues have also been found to be positively affected by its addition in a dog's diet.

Another target organ of note is the brain.  Apparently, it has a tendency to alleviate canine mood swings as it enhances their neural development.  So if you happen to have a moody Rottweiler or an overly active Labrador Retriever, your bottle of fish oil supplement might just come in handy.
