Lost Review - 3.23.2010 – Season 6 Episode 9
This week's Lost episode will go down in history as a "religious" experience. The episode had little action, but more importantly there are a lot of questions answered. After weeks of hearing about questions being answered the show finally delivers by revealing some heavy revelations that have been a mystery since the beginning of the show. The episode was named "Ab Aeterno", which is Latin for "from the beginning of time", and the similarities between the island and the Garden of Eden were evident yet again in this episode.
The episode focused on Richard, or in this case Ricardo. Ricardo is a simple farmer who's trying to make ends meet in the year 1867. His wife Isabella falls ill and he sets out to find medication for his wife. The local doctor and Ricardo get into a tussle and Ricardo ends up killing him. His punishment for killing the physician is death.
Ricardo winds up sitting in a cell and studying scriptures. He's reading the fourth chapter of the book of Luke where Satan tempts Jesus in the wilderness and tries to get Him to turn His back on God. Ricardo is told by a priest that there is no second chance for him and that he is doomed to hell, but Ricardo cries out for forgiveness from God and instead of being executed he is sold into slavery.
Ricardo and his shipmates are headed toward the island. Ricardo is chained to the Black Rock and a huge storm comes in and carries the rock inland. The man in black attacks the survivors but spares Richard. The MIB then takes the form of his dead wife Isabella and tells Richard they are in hell and must escape. The MIB also tells tries to convince Richard to kill Jacob which parallels Satan trying to temp Jesus to turn away from God. This conversation seems to tell us that MIB is evil and Jacob is good.
Richard finally speaks with Jacob and this is where the episode really hit biblical proportions. Jacob says that the island is basically blocking all of hell from being unleashed and evil spreading everywhere, and that his job is to keep the lid on. The MIB believes that people are inherently evil and wants to escape the island and unleash the forces of hell. Jacob believes that people are not pure evil and tries to convince the MIB by bringing people to the island. Once they get to the island they get a chance to choose between doing good or evil. Richard is granted immortality so he can be Jacob's messenger when the people get to the island, which explains why he looks so good for being 170 and some odd years old.
The episode ends with Hurley channeling messages from Isabella underneath what looks like the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Isabella tells Richard he still has meaning in his life, and that is to stop the MIB or else everyone will go to hell. Epic episode!
