Meditation: Affecting Factors and What to Expect From it

There are a lot of people who wonder how meditation helps in dealing with problems.  Unlike crutches for a fractured leg utilized during the course of physical therapy, there is nothing concrete in meditation that people see, which leaves people puzzled.  People know that the leg fracture got better once the patient walks straight and without crutches and casts.  Expectations are what kill the momentum.  There are times when therapy becomes a failure because people expect too much.  They run an outline in their minds about how it should be after the last session and when it's over, the checklist should show a 100% accomplishment.

As in love or perhaps anything else, expectation should come in least.  Hope would rather be a logical term as it gives off that sense of optimism.  Expectations are rather solid and forthright.  It gives you an outlook that is beyond optimism, which becomes such a bad picture once these are not met.  Expecting is more of wanting a perfect result.  However, perfection could be venomous to the psyche.  So to prevent any expectations from progressing, here are some things to take note of regarding the processes and outcomes of meditation.

Never expect a session to be as smooth or even take place if you're intoxicated.  Alcohol has a great effect on the brain and, in turn, will affect your sense of focus and concentration.  Prescription drugs can also pose an effect, so if you are under medication, steer clear of the meditative route for the meantime.

Block off all sound.  If your room is filled speakers thumping with Led Zeppelin and all your telecommunication devices are on, there wouldn't be continuous focus.  Make sure you do not have important calls during your designated meditation time because even if you turn your phones off, the expectation will just keep you from concentrating.

Just the same as drinking alcohol or medications, a full stomach can also be just as off putting.  Nature calls will keep you disturbed.  Smoking can also invite the same effect.  So for a heavy smoker, do not expect the process to be as thorough and successful because that nicotine fix will keep you craving every now and then.

Be cautious about your meditative position.  Sit up straight, arch your lower back and level your head.  You may use cushions for support to prevent you from crouching – not to invite the sleeping bug.  Otherwise, your meditation session will span another calendar day.

Clothes should be as comfortable as possible.  Spandex that is too tight may affect your breathing.  Same goes for your footwear.  Have you ever witnessed someone indulging in deep meditation with skinny jeans and Roman sandals?

Scent can be very instrumental for meditation to be effective.  Make sure there are aromatherapy candles around your area of peace and quiet, or any other substances that emit a fragrance that you prefer.

And of course, the bright lights.  Turn them off.  Let the candles work on double purpose:  for illumination and a fragrant atmosphere.

If done accordingly, these simple steps will lead you towards a progressive meditation session.  But then again, never expect immediate positive outcomes.  It's a long process.  A process greatly controlled by your willpower and tenacity. Deep guided meditation does not erase all your troubles.  Results do not show in an instant.  It helps you handle things easily and deal with it like some nasty knee gash that you got from a rough soccer match – bleeding, slit skin, pain – but still standing up, walking tall.
