What You Should Know About Anxiety

Anxiety is a common occurrence. However, there are danger signals that you should not miss.

Anxiety is a feeling of worry or apprehension without known cause. This should be differentiated from fear or phobias where the cause can be pinpointed. Anxiety in itself is normal as it natural for us to worry about the unknown. However it becomes a disorder if it is prolonged and exaggerated, affecting our daily lives and normal functions.

Anxiety disorder can be pinpointed by the person himself when he finds that his work and social life is getting affected. When he finds that he is too worried to go to work or cannot face his friends, this is definitely a sign that he needs to seek help from professionals or counselors.

Anxiety can be manifested by many physical symptoms such as pain in the head, stomach or muscles. It is also common to have palpitations, racing pulse, digestive disorders like diarrhea or constipation as well as indigestion. Uncontrolled urination can also happen and this can be embarrassing. These can affect a person's performance in school and work so it is vital that anxiety should be given appropriate attention.

Panic disorder is a member of the family of anxiety disorders. In this case the apprehension is very severe and the onset is sudden, taking the person off guard. The symptoms may vary depending on the person. These include chest tightness, difficulty of breathing, and heaviness on the chest, numbness, palpitations, dizziness, and most often a feeling of being in a dream.

Panic attacks can last for several minutes and the attacks are few and far in between at first. But it needs proper attention and if possible treatment because the attacks will gradually become more frequent and may lead to phobias, which are more difficult to deal with and to treat.

Anxiety disorder is not only found in adults but in children as well, so it is important for parents to watch over their child for signs of anxiety as these can be a precipitating factors for other mental illnesses if the child's coping mechanism fail. Keeping an open line of communication between child and parent is important to maintain a good relationship.

Children will have a reason why they do or don't do things, and parents should be able to understand these reasons and read between the lines. One of the things that should alert a parent is when a child does not want to go to school and do not know the reason why. This is different from refusing to know the reason. It would be wise to consult the child's teacher or counselor and have the child tested for anxiety disorder.

In cases of panic or fear, it is said that one way of dealing with it is to face your fear. But this can be difficult to pinpoint in anxiety disorders as there is no specific cause. An in depth psychoanalysis might be needed as this may have started with unresolved childhood issues. Other times it is caused by stress or the environment in which he lives in. Being able to point out the root cause can go a long way to solving the problem of anxiety in both children and adults.
