The Famous Oceanic Airlines of Lost
Oceanic Airlines (sometimes called Oceanic Airways) is a fictional airline used in several films and television programs. It is not to be confused with the real airlines Trans-Oceanic Airways and Ocean Airlines.
The original occurrence of Oceanic Airways was in the 1996 film Executive Decision. The film's producers shot extensive footage of an actual Boeing 747 but with a different logo and livery to that used on the later Lost Oceanic flight. This stock footage has been reused in several films and television programs, spreading the Oceanic Airlines brand across various and unrelated fictional universes.
The most well known version of an Oceanic Airlines logo from the ABC television series Lost.
Its most famous appearance is in Lost, where Oceanic Airlines is featured branded with a highly-stylized logo depicting an Aboriginal dot painting that resembles a bullseye, an island, or an "O" (for Oceanic), but does not feature recycled stock footage from Executive Decision, and uses its own Oceanic Airlines logo.
The show's storyline begins with the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 on a mysterious island.
The show explores the aftermath of the crash of Oceanic Flight 815 from Sydney to Los Angeles. The producers of Lost also created a website for the fictional airline, including clues and references to the show's plot. In flashforwards, a group of the characters that survive the crash are nicknamed the "Oceanic Six" (Hurley, Kate, Jack, Sayid, Sun, and Aaron). In January 2008, viral marketing billboards for Oceanic Airlines were placed by ABC in various large cities around the world as part of the Find 815 alternate reality game. Fictitious TV advertisements for the company also aired on ABC and the internet, including one advertisement that apparently airs in an alternate universe where flight 815 did not crash and Oceanic has a "perfect safety record."
The name may be derived from the White Star Line (the operating company of the RMS Titanic and several other disaster prone vessels), otherwise known as the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company.
The portrayal of Oceanic Airlines as being disaster-prone has become something of an inside joke among television and movie fans: for example, popular TV review site Television Without Pity sold a set of limited edition shirts and messenger bags branded with an Oceanic Airlines logo and the slogan "Getting halfway there is all the fun!" The Oceanic slogan from Lost seems especially apt for the danger-prone airline: "Taking You Places You've Never Imagined!", as does its logo: a highly stylized Australian dot painting resembling a bulls-eye or an island. In one episode of Lost, a character finds out about the survival of several tail section survivors, and jokes, "I guess we can all sue Oceanic together."
