Weezer's Hurley (or Hurlin)?
It's their third record in the last three years, and the lyrics reflect it could possibly be their last.
Going into this album, I wasn't in a hurry to review it. I had it on my desk for over a week and was even shy to open the case. I am always looking forward to new material from Weezer, however their last few albums have been less than appealing due to a lack of energy and having a more coffee shop like approach in their demeanor, hopefully this wouldn't be more of the same. Either that or the interesting choice of album art!
It's kind of like watching a dog with a broken leg try to chase a squirrel, it's a sad thing, but I digress.
Back to the album, Weezer's Hurley reignites the band's energetic persona for a new generation; it's apparent they've gotten their shot of B-12 as well as downed a few Red Bull's gearing up for writing the album, a welcomed return to the rock scene. The first three tracks almost sound like lost tracks from The Blue Album.
Although the first time I heard Memories (Track 1) I was disturbed by the apparent TORNADO SIREN sounding noise in the background, but soon grew on me. The track is nothing short of hit, instantly becoming one of my top 10 favorite songs from the band all time.
Ruling Me (Track 2) I feel is the album's best song, and more than likely the next single from the band. It is this album's Heart Songs and will more than likely be my official Fall Anthem. Dealing with the choices we make and those who influence them.
Smart Girls (Track
is more than likely one of the most hilarious tracks off the album just dealing with the fact that there are smart girls out there and that the band obviously is looking for a higher I.Q. in their groupies. Ladies make a note.
Perhaps one of the saddest tracks I could find on this album was Time Flies'(Track 10) which talks about having birthdays and being the worst day of the year, falling into a funk and just getting depressed. The track also hints at a possible breaking up or leaving the music scene all together for the long time group.
Viva La Vida (Track 12) is a cover of the Coldplay hit. Don't ask me why it is that Weezer chose to put this on their album, but go figure…I guess they figured it would bring some additional sales, and their probably right. Overall good cover, a little faster pace than the actual Coldplay song, and they use some different words in the cover, but overall it's okay.
Other awesome tracks on this album include Unspoken (Track 4), and I Wanna Be Somebody (Track 13), and Represent (Track 14) round out a long list of awesome tracks on this album. If the band does want to leave the scene, this is a fantastic note to go out on. Overall any rock/alternative fan should enjoy this album, it's definably one of the best the band has out there, behind only one (The Blue Album).
