Older oil furnaces are safer in terms of not leaking carbon monoxide, but they are not as energy efficient.

The price of fuels is another factor which will influence your decision to replace a furnace. For example, oil is not as easy to get as it used to be. If your area has dwindling supplies, and you also have a unit that is older than 15 years, it's time to get out of that easy chair and start figuring out if you need a new unit.

How can you figure your utility bill savings if you get a new furnace? Figuring up your potential cost savings is not difficult. You can get a total of one year's worth of heating bills. Then multiply that total by the difference between the old and new efficiency ratings. Take the cost of the new unit and divide by the number you got for your utility cost savings. The answer is how long it will take you to recoup the cost of the new furnace in terms of years.

Another factor to keep in mind when deciding to replace a furnace is if the size or configuration of your house has changed. If you have added square footage through a room addition, it might be necessary to install a larger furnace to handle the work load.
