The Antonio Margarito - Miguel Cotto fight held on July 26th at the MGM Arena in Las Vegas will go down as the best boxing match in recent history compared to the Vasquez - Marquez wars. I know I can't wait to watch the replay and the replay and the replay of this one. People will describe this fight as an epic battle, a classic, a thriller I will just simply say unreal, Martin Scorsese could not have scripted one better. Sitting ringside along with some fellow great fighters Winky Wright, Zab Judah, Juan Manuel Lopez, Jorge Arce and Fernando Vargas I was amazed watching as they were even ducking at every thrown punch. I knew going into this one that the lead up or hype for this fight would not come close to what was going to happen in the ring. Both Cotto and Margarito are true gentleman and from the very early press conferences there was no war of words, no off the wall antics, no f bombs as Bob Arum would say.
Both fighters treated each other with mutual respect and were waiting to demonstrate to the world what boxing is all about in the ring. There was no major lead ups, no HBO produced 24/7 series just two tough hard nosed world class boxers preparing to square off for the WBA welterweight championship. Some pitted this as a battle of Margarito's Mexico against Cotto's Puerto Rico and yes throughout the stadium each flag was represented from the very top of the MGM Arena to the several carried into the ring.
As I sat at the edge of my chair watching the first round I knew all boxing fans were in for a real treat. In the second round both Cotto and Margarito exchanged punch after punch body shots, upper cuts, overhand rights, overhand lefts you name it the punches came from all angles. These were not jabs they were punches with force with many landing. I thought the second round was the best round I have ever watched. Well I was wrong because then came the third, the fourth, and the fifth and so on each one getting better. In the early going Cotto had the edge and had a very good fourth round and it appeared that he was getting in the groove and picking Margarito off. By the time the fifth round ended I wished that they could change the rules and bring back the fifteen rounder's I just did not want this one to end. The first five rounds were the preview or the warm up, these boxers extraordinaire were going to make the next six rounds Oscar winning.
Yes this fight could be made into a motion picture and probably would win the best action flick of the year.
In the sixth, Margarito started to turn the corner Cotto was starting to realize that Margarito was a like no one he ever faced before. Margarito just took Cotto's best and just continued to come forward and began to rattle Cotto. In the seventh Margarito hurt Cotto but in the last twenty seconds of the rounds Cotto came back and slugged away at Margarito. The late rally in the seventh by Cotto was not enough to give him the round this one went to Margarito. Panic was starting to set in on the Cotto fans, fashion designer Mark Ecko who created a line of Cotto shirts and escorted Cotto into the ring was starting to sweat at ringside but continued to cheer Cotto on. Margarito the Tijuana Tornado would just not go away he just kept coming. Cotto would try to battle back in the eighth but was getting caught on the ropes by the Tijuana Tornado who would land numerous shots to Cotto's head. In the ninth I thought Cotto had a decent round I even scored the ninth his way but the only thought I had in my mind was lets call time out and make this one 15 rounds. Still the boxing greats at ringside were ducking with each punch and were in disbelief that both men were still standing and slugging away.
In the tenth Margarito was awesome stopping Cotto in his tracks several times and clearly was in charge now. Here comes the eleventh and here comes Margarito again and again he would not go away and Cotto was weakening with every punch landed by Margarito. A solid right hand by Margarito forced Cotto to take a knee only few would get back up at this point knowing more punishment was about to come. Share heart and desire not to let his fans down Cotto pulled himself up from the canvas. The Tornado now swirled in for the clincher, not giving Cotto a chance to regroup Margarito landed several more shots and Cotto went down to a knee again. This time Cotto nodded to his corner and Cotto's uncle and trainer tossed in the towel. This one was over all of Mexico was celebrating as Michael Buffer announced the new world welterweight champ "The Tijuana Tornado" Antonio Margarito.
