The simple reason for that is there isn't a proper landing page on the other side of the ad. Your homepage is only a good destination if there is focus and it's designed like a landing page. To say it another way, make sure your landing page and your ads match. You need to make sure your landing page focuses and weaves with the content you use in your ads. You need to make everything apparent for the traffic that arrives on your page. They must find it right away. People who are forced to do work are only going to find somewhere else to go and you won't succeed.

Another blunder people often make is not being focused on the unique selling point of whatever product you're offering. If you don't know your product inside and out, you can't target an ad that's successful now can you? If you don't identify your USP, you will never separate yourself from the competition. You need to consider why anyone would choose you over everyone else. Why is your product or service so different? You will want to create your USP if you can't readily identify one. You can easily just throw all your money at your Adwords campaign but it's not that easy to take that same amount and spread it evenly amongst other campaigns and be successful.
