Uses of UPS Units

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are used to provide power when regular utility power is unavailable.  Although they commonly used for providing power in remote locations or emergencies, this is not because they are the same as auxiliary power units, emergency power units or standby generators.

Unlike the aforementioned power sources, UPS provides an immediate and continuous supply of power to a device, hence protecting it from power interruption and allowing time for auxiliary or emergency powers to kick in, equipment to be safely shut down or utility power restored.  Hence although UPS units are often used in remote locations – like my little village – where power-outages are common and take longer to fix, this is not because they are the same of auxiliary or emergency power.
UPS units are used to correct a range of power problems including power cuts, voltage sags and spikes, under and over-voltage, line noise, frequency variation and harmonic distortion.  Living where I do, I experience power problems such as these on a regular basis and, as such, I have invested in a variety of UPS units to protect myself, my work and my equipment.  Allow me to explain my personal UPS collection to help you get an idea of the uses of power protection.

A lot of the work I do makes use of multiple desktop and laptop computers and could be corrupted or lost should my PCs suddenly lose power.  What’s more, given the amount of power cuts and surges that I get in a year, severe hardware degradation is inevitable for anything plugged solely into a mains supply.  For this reason, I run all my computers through a UPS unit that eliminates power surges and provides immediate power that keeps my PCs running during a power cut, giving me time to shut them down safely or connect an auxiliary power supply.   In shorter power outages, the UPS actually manages to keep the PCs running for the duration of the power outage – which is especially useful!  Although my laptops have their own batteries, which protect them from power outages, the UPS unit maintains a consistence voltage supply when they are plugged in – extending the battery life significantly.

I also have a UPS unit attached to my TV, for a similar reason to the laptops.  Modern plasma and LCD televisions are especially susceptible to damage from fluctuating voltage and burnouts causes by sudden voltage drops.  UPS units prevent both over and under-voltage, as well as eliminating voltage sags and spikes to help protect my TV.

Another household appliance that I make sure to connect to a UPC device is my cordless phone.  As useful as cordless phones are, the trouble is that they require power to the case in order for the handset to work; lose this power and your conversation is cut short.  As unlikely as it may sound that a power cut would strike right in the middle of a phone conversation, it actually happens with surprisingly regularity!  Maybe I spend too much time on the phone, but I have been cut off many a time in mid-conversation and it is very frustrating; especially seeing as my wife often works over 2000 miles away and the time-difference means that there just aren’t that many hours of the day when we can both talk.  Furthermore, since I can’t get mobile reception in my village; the last thing I want in a power cut is to be left stranded with no means of communication!

The final piece of UPS technology that I use is a small unit that I attach to my alarm clock.  I’m sure you’ve all experienced the phenomena of waking up on the morning of an important occasion, only to find that your alarm clock has run out of batteries overnight and you are running two hours late!  Well this happened to me on one especially important date (it wasn’t quite my marriage, but it may as well have been given the amount of trouble I wound up in!) and that was all I needed to get myself a little UPS battery to prevent this awful event ever reoccurring!
