I gave a talk recently at a luxury RV resort in Florida where it is common to see $million + motor homes and the comfortably retired crowd hanging around for the winter with nothing to worry about but the return on their annuities.
I expected 30 to forty people to arrive, have coffee and listen to me talk about self defense and show self defense products that RVers in particular would find interesting. Having been among them myself, sailing my 40 foot, diesel powered land yacht across America's highways from coast to coast for three years, I had an idea of the security concerns that arise along the way, they are many but that's a subject for another article.
More than 100 people showed up and it was an interesting presentation and it seemed that many were very keen on what I had to say.
I related a story I had read a while back about an older gentleman who had pulled his motor home into a park in the Columbia River Gorge called Celilo, just off of hwy 84 next to the mighty Columbia River. I am familiar with the park as I had spent many happy hours windsurfing there more than a decade ago when I lived on that side of the country.
The parking lot at Celilo is large, mostly level and it is allowed to park over night in a camper or RV; A perfect place to pull in if you are tired of driving and need to sleep. As the story goes; the man pulled in and being early spring he found he was the only rig camped there overnight. I can speak from personal experience that that fact alone can cause some anxiety as it tends to foster a felling of vulnerability; strange place, just passing through, all alone, and so on.
At around 3:00 am someone knocked at the door of his RV. Under the circumstances this was a very alarming situation. He shouted "who is it" and a voice came back demanding that he open the door. He refused and the person outside threatened violence. The man in the RV reached into the cabinet over the door and pulled out his Bear Spray, which he kept there so he wouldn't forget to take it when he went hiking. When the voice outside threatened to start shooting if he did not open the door he pulled the safety off of the bear spray, opened the door and let two men standing outside have it in the face.
Now I have come into contact with the residue of bear spray that was on a surface that received a glancing spray about an hour before I had touched it. It was a hot day and with the same hand I wiped some sweat from my face; that was a mistake! I had transferred the bear spray residue from my hand to my face. My face felt like it was on fire for two hours! I can only imagine what a direct blast in the face would have felt like!
The man in the RV called 911 and Sheriff's deputies were dispatched from The Dalles about 45 minutes away. When deputies arrived one of the criminals was still rolling on the ground in agony. Another had run away but did not get far. Sheriff's deputies found him wandering no far away trying to make his way back across I-84 to no avail. It seems he was suffering a bout of temporary blindness.
Now bear spray is not recommended for use against humans or domestic animals, in fact it is illegal in some states to use it in that manner, so I don't recommend it though it was fortunate that the older gentleman in the RV had some sort of defense; a nearly identical incident against American tourists in Mexico resulted in a couple being robbed, the man being severely beaten, and his wife raped as well as having their RV shot through by a pistol.
In my personal journeys across the country, I kept a 9 oz pepper spray in a similar cabinet over the door. Once I even had to pull it but convinced the stranger to leave, then myself, weighed anchor and drove to a safer location.
Guns are a good form of home defense, but pepper spray does not require a careful aim and does not require you to hire a criminal defense attorney to explain to a jury that you acted in self defense which is often the case in a self defense shooting.
I recommend an 18% Oleo Resin Capsicum pepper spray such as Wildfire. The 9 oz. pistol grip is the one I use for RV and home protection and it is HOT! It will keep an attacker incapacitated for 45 minutes or more leaving plenty of time to escape. Whether for home protection or when traveling in these tough economic times, it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
