While doctors need easy access of a patient's vital body parts for any necessary surgical or treatment procedures, it sure doesn't feel right moving around with you back hanging out. A medical worker can make a clear and big comparison of this with their nursing scrubs. For patients' satisfaction, or should we say keeping saved from embarrassment, the functional hospital gowns will now be turned into something fashionable, in the U.K.

Ben de Lisi, designer for stars like Kate Winslet, was recruited to do the revamp. He speaks of something "fabulous and aspirational". It would be made from beautiful cotton shirting which is very smooth, cool and lux. De Lisi will be doing this project with a fund of $39,000 or £25,000 from United Kingdom's Department of Health, but will have to keep the pricing comparable to the existing hospital gowns.

We can just hope the design don't fall too focused on fashion just so the patients are given "dignity" as it is functionality that has to be given more emphasis. In the US, designing a more respectful hospital gowns has also reached suggestions. Efforts have also been made. Nicole Miller, for instance, had been hired by Hackensack University Medical Center, Hackensack N.J., and designed colorful pajama iterations that are costly. Maine Medical Center in Portland, Muslims were given sarong.

Down With the Gown program, which is sponsored by RWJ foundations, worked to come up with an ideal gown. Ideas came from using loose and stylish raglan sleeves which are common in nursing scrubs, to v-neckline instead of scoopneck, and fasteners. Prof Traci Lamar, head of the program for the College of textiles spoke of a kimono design, while Leslie Hatch of Victoria secret suggested a wrap. But those designs are a little obstruction in caring for patients who can't be moved due to conditions such as broken bones.

Some of the ideas of the Down With The Gown team has been displayed but what we really need are something that would be functional. In the meantime, we await the creation of Ben de Lisi, which will be available early next year for National Health Service hospitals.
