The health care uniform is a symbol of knowledge. It represents the many hours studying anatomy or meds, the hours spent in clinical practice, the numerous nights spent cramming for tests. In the 1980's traditional nursing uniforms gave way to uniform scrubs. Originally worn solely in the operating room in colors of green or blue, uniform scrubs found their way into all areas of hospital nursing and into doctor and dental offices. Companies such as Cherokee Scrubs and Dickies Scrubs expanded the unisex scrub into a uniform with figure flattering styles for all body shapes and a multitude of colors and prints. Different hospital units took to wearing designated colors to differentiate their work space. Prints became fun and many pediatric prints helped make a child's hospital stay a little less imposing. By the 1990's uniform scrubs had become very popular, as they were easier to work in.

Scrub tops are available in the basic v-neck pullover unisex top as well as a basic snap front version. Basic styles come in the traditional hospital blue and hospital green as well as several dozen fashion colors and have a size range of XS to 5XL. A variety of other styles, including faux wrap tunics, empire waist tops, flexible fabric tops, and contrast print tops, has sprung into existence as the medical uniforms industry now follows the fashion trends with styles and colors that are "au courant". Pants have replaced the uniform dress and skirt as the nursing uniforms of choice, providing the health care professional with greater ease of movement and bending. These scrub pants come in regular cut, boot cut or flare leg options. And naturally, just as scrub tops follow fashion trends, so do scrub pants. The health care professional can now choose from elastic waist pull-on pants, cargo pants with either an elastic waist or a drawstring waist, boxer style pants, flip waist pants, low rise pants, and flat front pants. Made to coordinate with both solid and print scrub tops, getting dressed in the morning is easier than ever.

To accompany the colorful array of scrub pants and tops, warm up jackets offer cover-up protection and extra pockets in healthcare settings. Fabricated in matching prints and solid colors these jackets provide the hospital equivalent of the three piece suit. Also available as a cover-up option are lab jackets and lab coats. Generally white in color, these garments provide a more "starched" look in the workplace.
