Medical Themed Shows Took Place Crime Programs

Most of us often spent our Wednesday nights watching the 3 CSI franchise or pamper our Saturday nights with Prison Break or 24. In fact, we often compare Horacio Cane to other CSI heads and we almost seem to notice H’s signature movement and his very clever yet less worded comments. And yes, who would have forgotten his very dramatic shades? We have enjoyed seeing Jack Bauer bleed while he heroically saves a President and the country as he try to combat conspiracy. We even loved that unique ringing sound of his department’s telephone. Who would have forgotten Elisha Cuthbert? Isn’t she is sexy portraying Jack’s daughter in that program? Really, these men in uniforms with guns captured the viewers taste for quite some time replacing the great comedies like Will and Grace. But how do these crime shows fair up with the surging medical themed programs like ER, Grey’s Anatomy, Nurse Jackie, Scrubs, Mercy, and Hawthorne?

Medial themed TV shows have spring up like wild mushrooms these past few years and gradually take over some of the most successful crime based or suspense themed programs.  Network like CBS, NBC, and Fox have their own shows that are about the nursing profession, the ethics involving said profession, the doctors and their “marketed” behind the scenes lives, and everything about the medical world. Not to mention the flaunting of colorful and vibrant medical scrubs and nursing uniforms freely supplied by big manufacturers like Cherokee, Landau, and Dickies of course for exposure. These got every homes very knowledgeable of some medical terms that few years back were an alien words in a normal community.

While Grey’s Anatomy focuses on Doctors as main subjects and how they deal with their everyday duty juggling family, relationships, and career other mainstream medical dramas are more into using the nursing profession as subjects. In the current reports from various news outlets and nursing associations, RN’s makes up the biggest percentage in terms of population in the medical field. Though said studies also showed that their number is still below the supply ceiling needed for the country. In ER and Grey’s Anatomy, RN’s are often left in the background of physicians and their jobs are often not emphasized.

For schools and the nursing associations, shows that focus on the medical field are important tool that will help them promote the profession. This is in line with the declining enrolment in many nursing colleges and universities. For scrub manufacturers, these shows are simply their biggest marketing device. Some manufacturers and retailers would often name their products according to the name of the show, buying the right to use of the name. One famous medical scrubs name that is associated with a medical drama is the Grey’s Anatomy scrubs.

The medical dramas that we fanatically watch really made greater effect on our society than any other TV shows. Some would say that while comedy shows stirs up their emotions and crime programs tickle the intellect, medical dramas is a combination of the two.
