What Not To Wear In a Professional Workplace

Experts have always said that they way you dress can play a big role in your professional career. They even say that it can make or break you especially during an interview. This is because the way you dress can either impress your would-be employer or turn them off without even looking at what you can do for the company. This is the reason why part of the culture of a company is to have a dress code for its employees. This can either be a business casual approach but most of the time, companies require a business professional dress code.

Once the business professional attire for men and women has been established as a dress code, it is expected that employees would follow this through or be reprimanded. With business casual, things have been a little hazy on what amounts to a business casual. But, the business professional attire for men and women is very exact in that it requires men to wear business suits, or blazers with dress slacks or khakis and wearing a tie is required. In women, the skirt-and-blouse combination is expected. They can also wear slacks, shirts and other formal combinations. What to wear is easier to remedy but there are some things that must not be worn in a professional workplace unless you want to get a memo from the human resources.

Workout clothes
Yes, the company might have its own gym or fitness center but it does not mean you have to work wearing your workout clothes. Top of the line brands on your workout clothes does not make it professional attire. It may be expensive and very comfortable for your exercise regimen but these are still workout clothes and are meant to be used for your gym exercises, Pilates or yoga, or aerobics but not for the boardroom.

Sweatpants and sweatshirts
The same way that the workout clothes need to remain in the gym or fitness center, the sweatpants and sweatshirts need to remain in your house or in the gym. They basically scream I just got back from jogging or from the and not ready for the office yet. Or it makes you look like you just want to laze around the couch the whole day. They look too comfortable for the office. If you really want to feel comfortable and still look presentable then why not try a worn-in pair of cotton chino slacks with a simple, but still classy, white fitted tee. If you need something for warmth, then try a cashmere cardigan over it, and you'll not only feel great but you would look great, too.

Flip-Flop Sandals
Just like workout clothes, there is a good place for flip-flops such as the beach, hanging out in the park, walking your dog, or other weekend activities that require weekend attire. A pair of even the most expensive flip-flops does not make it formal enough for the office. Men can try wearing boat shoes in neutral colors as they look dressy enough but still comfortable. Women can opt for a dressy sandal or open-toed shoes that allow you to be comfortable but still very presentable.

Short shorts
Never ever wear short shorts in your office no matter how long or short your legs are. But wearing shorts to the office is still possible on a business casual Friday as long as you make sure it is worn the right way. There are Dickies shorts for men and women that fall just below the knee. If you paired these Dickies shorts with a smart blazers and heels, you can change the perception of the beach outfit to casual Friday attire.

Too much skin
Business outfits should always make sure skin is not showing, not the cleavage nor the midriff. What one has to always remember is that what you wear makes an impression about who you are. If you are always showing part of your body, your boss might think you are more interested in other things other than work. When in skirt, it is best that you wear pantyhose or stockings so as not to expose bare legs.

Messy, Wrinkled or Torn Clothing
What you wear affects how others perceive you. If you come to the office wearing messy, wrinkled or torn clothing, your employers as well as colleagues will think you do not care much about work. Or they will wonder how hardworking you are when you can't even take the time to fix yourself.

Face tattoo
It is an office and not a party. The most that you can do is put on make-up, the less the better but not any other facial decorations like a face tattoo.
