Which Are The Best Workwear Overalls At Market?
Buying a new set of Overalls in not rocket science but with so many variations now available which type do you go for and perhaps more importantly which brand?. I am writing this through experience having spent 12 years in the motor trade as a mechanic I can appreciate how quality coveralls can not only protect you from minor injuries and the inevitable dirt, grease and oil associated with the motor industry but they can also serve as a must have tool.
Many people would not consider there workwear as tools but the fact remains without this protective clothing our work would be much more hazardous. I was always quite a sporty person in my younger days and with sport comes injury, needless to say I had a few injuries along the way. Knee pain is one of the worst pains you can imagine and being in the motor trade you spend a lot of time on your knees and this does take its toll on you over time.
Some advice to younger workers who are just getting into the motor trade, look after your knees from day 1, get a kneeling pad or some knee pad overalls. Overalls with knee pads will protect you from cold hard floors and will reduce the impact your work has on your knees and legs. Once the damage is done it is not reversible, I never listened to co-workers when they warned me about these things but hopefully someone will pay attention, we are not invincible.
A Quality pair of overalls will stand the test of time, I have always looked for 4 things when buying overalls 1. Quality, I cant stress enough on this point. 2. Comfort, & 3. Practicality 4. Value for money or price. You dont have to spend a fortune on a new boilersuit, prices are very competitive nowadays so its just about choosing the right ones for your needs.
In my time as a mechanic I tried all the top brands and each has something different and unique to offer. In this article I will be looking at the top 3 brands Dickies, Snickers & Makita, now they all offer many styles so depending on your profession your choice may differ to suit. Lets just look at the overall brand to start with.
Snickers Overalls in my opinion are by far the best made coveralls of the 3 they truly are built to last. I recall when Snickers was a fairly new brand and many co-workers where toying with the idea of buying them. Back then Snickers was known as Skillers and you could only import them from abroad luckily they are now widely available from most workwear retailers but the best selection is often found online.
Snickers workwear on the whole is a top quality brand and the boiler suits they make are very comfortable and offer excellent freedom of movement, many Snickers overalls have elasticated wrists which I can appreciate may not be comfortable for everyone but at the same time this is an option so you dont have to go for this type. Snickers are the more expensive of the 3 but it's easy to see where the extra money goes, also the most stylish of the 3 although I'm not giving out points for looks here just practicality, my value rating for Snickers Coveralls is 8/10.
Dickies Overalls are probably the most common of the 3, many workers will be familiar with the Dickies workwear brand as they do offer fantastic value for money & of the 3 brands they also offer the largest range meaning your more likely to find a pair to suit your every need. While Dickies Overalls are very well made and do last the distance they lack a certain engineering you get with the other 2 brands by this I mean they are made for the masses so the fitting is not suited to every body type having said that if you happen to fit into the average man sized category then its difficult to find a fault with them.
Dickies offer there Coveralls in 3 types. 1. The Dickies Redhawk range of overalls is in my opinion by far the best choice, more robust and comfortable than the other 2 offerings by the same brand and the fitting seems far Superior. 2. Dickies Deluxe range of Overalls are very practical its easy to see why they are the No1 choice amongst mechanics, the price range for these falls in the middle and worth every penny. Finally 3. Dickies Economy range, well its does exactly what it says on the tin they are cheap and cheerful and good value for a young apprentice just starting out, they offer little in the way extravagance and the fitting can feel a little loose, arguably the price compensates being as these are the cheapest pair of the 3 brands. As Dickies have such a large range it seems unfair to dock points for choice so my value rating for the entire range is 7/10.
Makita Overalls feel very comfortable and the fitting of these has always impressed me they almost feel tailored to suit my body type. I love the no nonsense classic style of Makita Coveralls and I can honestly say that I have bought more Makita Boilersuits than any other, a lot of this does have to do with the price as these fall again in the middle of the price range I feel is acceptable for such an item. My value rating for Makita Overalls is 8/10. It is a close call between the 3 my advice would be if you can afford paying that little bit more go for Snickers but certainly you cannot ignore that Dickies overalls are half as much to buy. Dont just choose on price though buy the correct tool for the job. There are very few retailers online that sell the entire range but I found Mammoth Workwear cover more brands than any of the others.
