Where and How to Find Wild Australian Birds

"Look, they're mating", called our tour guide, her voice quivering with excitement.

The centre of our attention was a pair of Jabirus in a nest at the top of a tree in Kakadu National Park, a spectacular unspoilt wilderness area in Australia's Northern Territory. They were a long distance from us and we had to accept our guide's word. They were certainly "up close and personal" and caused animated discussion amongst tourists in our group.

The Jabiru is a large bird, similar in size to a stork and it inhabits the coastal swamp and marshland areas of Northern Australia. It is also called the Black Necked Stork and is the only stork found in Australia.

I was a member of a tour group in a boat exploring the Yellow Water Billabong, a spectacular waterway and home to numerous varieties of birds and that dangerous creature we had all come to see—the crocodile.

These predators infest almost all lakes and rivers in Northern and Eastern Australia. We saw many of them either sunbaking on the mudflats or swimming in the billabong.

The Jabiru however was a little more elusive.

After the excitement of the "mating" pair, we looked forward to seeing a Jabiru at close quarters.

Finally we were rewarded.

Our guide switched off the boat motor and we drifted towards him. He was a beautiful looking bird with black and white body, dark green and purple neck and large black bill. His legs were long and coral-red in colour. The male has black eyes and the female yellow eyes.

He tolerated our admiring gazes, just long enough for photos, then flew off to do his fishing in a more peaceful spot.

That was the only Jabiru we saw.

But viewing it and the crocodiles at close quarters, the variety of birdlife, the serenity of the Australian Outback wetlands, the colourful waterlilies and the lush, green beauty of the area, made it a memorable experience.

An interesting conversation took place at the end of the tour.

As we walked off the boat, an earnest little boy of about 8, asked: "Mum, what is mating?" I didn't hear her reply, but she pointed to dad walking a few steps behind.

I suspect she may have said: "Ask your father son!"

Footnote.

The Yellow Water Billabong is about a 3 hour drive from Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory and is part of Kakadu National Park. This spectacular wilderness area has many attractions, including ancient Aboriginal art rock galleries, majestic waterfalls and superb outback scenery.

If you are visiting Darwin, a trip to this area is a "must".

A number of tour companies operate day tours from Darwin, but it is a long day and you will find it very tiring.

Try to arrange for an overnight stay in the small town of Jabiru and use this as a base to explore this area, including the more remote Arnhem Land and the majestic Jim Jim and Twin Falls waterfalls.
