Buying a Winter Wetsuit

Wetsuits play an important role in the popularity of watersports today. Without buying a winter wetsuit participation in outdoor watersports would be limited to the summer months or warmer climates. Advanced wetsuit technology at affordable prices has helped people to enjoy surfing all year round and to stay in the water for extended periods.

Winter wetsuits have a higher neoprene material thickness in comparison to summer suits, giving better insulation, warmth and protection when you need it. In winter time especially there is a higher risk of contracting hypothermia, this is due to the fact that water is 25 times more heat-conducting than air, making you lose your body heat quickly. A wetsuit keeps you warm as a thin layer of water comes between your body and the wetsuit, the body heats it naturally creating a warm insulating layer.

The quality of neoprene is reflected in the price, a top-end suit will consist entirely of very flexible neoprene whereas an entry level suit under £100 will have basic neoprene with a few stretch panels.

Here are a list of features to look out for when buying a winter wetsuit:

• Quality winter wetsuits have a neoprene combination of 5 (for Torso) and 4mm (around limbs to give you more flexibility allowing you to paddle and swim) or 5 and 4 and 3mm.
• Glued & blindstitched seams will provide maximum stretch and strength with zero water penetration. The stitching appears on the front and glued on the reverse to form a watertight seal.
• On thicker top-end winter wetsuits, heat welded tape is sometimes applied over the blindstitched seams on the inside to further strengthen and waterproof the wetsuit.
• Zip system and adjustable neck collar with maximum water seal and surfer comfort. Look out for smooth surfaces around the neck lining to prevent skin becoming irritated. Some people wear rash vests, however, these vests don't have any heat retention.
• Opt for a tight or snug fit with plenty of stretch. A full style wetsuit is ideal for winter with long legs and long arms to cover all your body just leaving your feet, hands, neck and head exposed.
• Knee padding to protect the knees.
• External secure Key Pocket.
• Lining in the chest area for added warmth.
