Billabong board shorts were invented by a hard core surfer by the name of Gordon Merchant in the 1980's. By the 1990's the company of Billabong was an international success and in February 2010 when the company's semiannual reports came out, there was nothing but exciting news for the company. They now have 360 retail stores up and operating including stores in: North and South America, Australia, and Europe. Much of Gordon Merchants success comes from his creative ability to market and promote his clothing. Billabong shorts are worn by some of the world's most famous surfers and when they sign on to do that, young children who dream of becoming surfers see what they are wearing and think "hey if they are good at surfing and they are wearing that, then I want to wear that, maybe I'll be that good." Also Billabong does a lot to help out in the environment. The majority of materials that are used for Billabong board shorts and their suits are made from recycled plastic soda bottles and recycled textiles. The name of this material is called Eco Supreme Suede and it is a light, comfortable, and quick drying material. The company also helps out with ocean clean ups as well as beach clean ups.

Men's board shorts are loud in color and bold in graphics. They have a few different cuts to match indivuals unique body types and or preferences. One is called the Taj (it is named after Taj Burrows who surfed) and that style is typically designed for the professional surfer in mind. The second cut is called the Havana (it is a shorter and slimmer appearance) and the other style is called the Vice which has a cut similar to what people in the 1980's wore (it has a very vintage resemblance). The mens shorts for next season are already set to hit shelves and they are called the Quad X Stretch. The material is able to stretch in four different directions to assist in easy mobility and comfort. Billabong shorts for men tend to run on average at about $50 dollars a pair which is pretty reasonable compared to competitors prices. Billabong board shorts women may purchase styles that are bright in color and what is actually really in at the moment for the company is glitter and sequins. The prices for women's board shorts tend to run about $40-$50 dollars a pair, which is also a very reasonable price.
