Kakadu National Park

Kakadu is the larger of two World Heritage-listed national parks in Australia's Northern Territory. Rich in cultural and natural beauty and just 3 hours drive from Darwin on sealed roads, the park is accessible to all and easy to fit into even the shortest stays in the Top End. This amazing park is 20,000 square kms, so staying few days will only allow you to explore a small part of the park.

The Traditional Owners of the Kakadu region come from a variety of Aboriginal clans, often speaking different languages and having different traditions. The Traditional Owners and the Director of National Parks ensure there is a balance between tourism and cultural requirements by jointly managing the park. One of the best places to get an introduction to the local Aboriginal culture is at the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre, where displays and exhibits explain traditional ways including hunting, cooking, ceremonies and laws. There are over 5000 sites for aboriginal rock art currently known in Kakadu, making it the world's richest area. In the East Alligator region of Kakadu lies Ubirr, which is home to a spectacular display of rock art and the loop walking trail also provides stunning views over the park and into Arnhem Land. On the rocky overhangs you will see paintings of animals, food and spiritual beings that were painted by the Aboriginal people to pass stories and traditions on to the younger generations.

Kakadu is one of the most ruggedly beautiful places in Australia and home to abundant wildlife. It is a remarkable diverse landscape with Savannah woodlands, monsoon forests, floodplains, billabongs, tidal flats and amazing sandstone escarpments. There are endless ways to explore the park, with extensive walking trails, 4WD trails, 2wd scenic drives like The Nature's Way scenic Drive, scenic flights and helicopters, cruises and tours. A few of the must-do activities would include a trip to Jim Jim and Twin Falls (accessible by 4wd only in the Dry season but can be flown over in the Wet season); a cruise on Yellow Water, where you can see salt water crocodiles and birdlife in their natural habitat; or stop at Gunlorn Waterfall Creek, made famous in the film Crocodile Dundee but also home to a beautiful plunge pool and waterfall.

Kakadu is divided into seven main areas, each with their own areas of interest and accommodation options. With a full range of services and accommodation types on offer from bush camping to hotel rooms, Jabiru is the main township of Kakadu. All seven areas of the park offer camping or van sites and some offer motel-style accommodation too such as at Yellow Water. In the early Dry season tourism peaks to take advantage of the cooler weather and May to August still allow good flows over the waterfalls in the park. Although the Wet season has very high temperatures and often means some parts of the park are inaccessible by road it can still be a spectacular time to visit, particularly if you can explore from the air.
