Combining a beautiful top with the wrong pair of beautiful pants or shoes can be worse than combining an unimpressive top with the right pair of pants or shoes. There are a few simple rules you can follow to make sure you get it right every time.

1. First and possibly most important is the fit. Always try on a few different sizes till you find one that fits perfectly, don't go for an oversized loose fit, it will make you look messy. A size too small is a big no-no.

2. Color, avoid overly bright colored clothing, instead choose pieces with stylish classical lines and dress them up with a nice pair of shoes, handbag and jewelry, don't go overboard! If you feel like wearing something colorful, choose a colorful top with dark bottoms, navy, black, brown or khaki pants or skirt. This combination will take the focus away from your hips.

Many believe that black is a color that will make you look slim but this is untrue. The best plus size colors are white, chocolate, mustard, beige, tar heel blue and maroon. So dump the black and start wearing some earthy colors.

3. When selecting pants don't go for a tapered leg, it will only make your legs look bigger. A pair of wide legged pants will also add some height and provide you with a slimming effect.

4. Shoes, never wear heels with your shorts or mini and wear heels with pants, skirts and long dresses. In fact when choosing your shoes go for a stunning pair of stilettos, or wedges if you are not comfortable on stilettos. Match your shoe with a color in your top for a really trendy look.

5. Don't forget your hair, a great hairstyle will go a long way to give you a smart and polished look.
