Beware: Your Pet Just Might Be Making You Sick

Your beloved pet is one of the most precious things in your life. However, it may be possible that your pet is the source of your annoying allergies. Even though any animal covered with fur can be a source of allergy, the most common sources are cats, dogs, rats, and horses. Pet allergy is usually a problem that happens at home but it may also occur in places such as the zoo, animal farms, and so on.

Signs and Symptoms

Pet allergy occurs when certain animal proteins trigger the inflammation in the lining of your nasal passages called allergic rhinitis that may cause sneezing, runny nose, and other symptoms connected with hay fever.

It may also cause constriction of the lung airways that can lead to asthma, wheezing, shortness of breath, and difficulty in breathing. Pet allergy can also come in the form of allergic dermatitis, a reaction of the immune system that causes skin inflammation. Signs of this condition include red patches on the skin and itchy skin.

Aside from these, general symptoms itchy, red or water eyes, nasal congestion, postnasal drip, cough, itchy nose, itchy throat, facial pressure, swollen and bluish skin under the eyes, chest tightness, chest pains, and difficulty in sleeping.

Causes

Your immune system works to generate antibodies that protect the body against harmful viruses, toxins, and bacteria. When you have a pet, the immune system thinks that the protein found in the animal’s skin, saliva, or urine could harm you so its immediate reaction is to release antibodies that in turn produce an allergic inflammatory response in your nasal passages, lungs, or skin.

Home Remedies

The best way to treat pet allergy is to avoid exposure to pets. If you are a pet lover and you do not want to get rid of your precious pet, what you can do is to find a new home for your pet that you can visit once in a while.

After the pet leaves the house, make sure you clean your entire home thoroughly. Wash the ceilings, walls and floors to eradicate traces of fur, dander, and other things from your pet that may contain allergens.

Replace upholstery in the furniture, carpets, bed sheets, blankets, and pillowcases to completely remove all the pet allergens. Also, it would help to use air filters that trap allergens floating around the air.

Now if you really want to keep your pet, you can minimize the condition of pet allergy by bathing your pet frequently. Do not do this yourself since the activity may trigger your allergy. Ask a family member or friend that does not have allergies to bathe your pet every week.

Certain rooms in the house should be pet-free. These include bedroom and other private areas in your home. This would reduce allergen levels in the house. Furthermore, remove carpeting and other furnishings that may attract fur and danger. Instead of carpets, the better option would be tiles, wood, linoleum, or vinyl flooring.

Another idea would be to keep your pet outside or in the yard. You can build a nice home for your precious pet and make sure that all its needs are taken care of so you would not feel too bad about keeping it out of the house.

You love your pet but your health is more important so keep in mind these tips so you can avoid pet allergies that may have adverse effects in your overall wellbeing.
